Last night I did a thing. I headed to Target alone. We’ve only got a couple days of summer left and I wanted to buy Tatiana a couple of outfits for back to school. I love shopping, a lot, but back to school shopping isn’t my favorite. In the past few years it’s been an unpleasant experience. Parents swarm all of our favorite stores and madness ensues every single time. It’s almost like Black Friday. One of my goals when going back to school shopping is to save the most money and my sanity. For that reason, I typically do back to school shopping a little differently than everyone else.

How to Save The Most Money on Back to School Shopping

1. Shop the sales

I always hit the sales rack when I’m searching for new pieces for Tat. I worked in retail in high school and college, so I know how quickly new styles go on sale. When back to school rolls around, those hot summer styles are already on sale. Since we live in Florida those same summer styles will last Tatiana until Christmas. Luckily for us, it doesn’t start to get cold here until after Christmas.

2. Take advantage of tax free weekend

We have tax free weekend in Florida every week before kids go back to school. Most states have a tax free weekend. If back to school shopping is when you usually rack up on clothing for your kids then tax free weekend is the way to go. I typically try to avoid it as that’s the time when most parents go shopping for their kids. The stores are the messiest and busiest which means it’s hard to find everything that you need without losing it.

3. Use coupons

Coupons are every mom’s best friend. Even though sales and tax free weekend can save you money, I suggest the added bonus of using coupons too. Some of my favorite places to shop that take coupons are Carter’s, Osh Kosh B’Gosh, JC Penney, and Macy’s. Academy Sports is always our go-to for sports gear and athleisure. They sometimes send out coupons too.

4. Shop online

I love shopping online! If I could buy every single thing online, I absolutely would. I notice that when I shop online I save a ton of more money. This year I bought all of Tatiana’s school supplies online and saved 25% more. I didn’t have the headache of scouring through the picked over supplies in the stores. All I had to do was press a few buttons and place my order. What makes it even better is that you can get cash back on your order with ebates. If you want to make things even easier, you can have everything shipped straight to your door!

Great tips for saving money on back-to-school items! I also used to repurpose, which was a fun way to save some cash. My sisters had a lot of notebooks that were only half-used or mostly unused, so I would put together the papers and create a new notebook from them. 🙂 I also re-used pencils, markers, and just about anything I could collect around the house which was unused and still in great state. I saved my parents a lot of money with my back-to-school frugality and I made some really neat DIY items!

Having more than one child in school can get very expensive. I feel very sympathetic towards my mom shopping for all of us. We always try to find sales. I used a lot online sales and Ebates too.

I try to start early and look for deals. We need a tax free weekend in Kentucky. All the states around us have those. I have spent so much already and I haven’t even started on clothes for my youngest. They can wear shorts for a while and he’s going through a growth spurt. I hate school shopping.

Love your tips for saving on back to school shopping! I am not going back to school, but I am a sucker for a cute backpack and new pins. I really just cannot get enough of them and I can’t wait for all the online deals. Coupons are a must!
