Apple Mummy Pop Tarts
If you’re looking for a fun Halloween treat that the kids can actually help make, these Apple Mummy Pop Tarts are it!
I love a good Halloween recipe, but especially one that looks impressive without requiring you to spend all day in the kitchen. These little mummy pop tarts are made with flaky pie crust, a warm cinnamon apple filling, sweet icing and, of course, googly eyes. They’re cute, festive and surprisingly easy to make.
And let’s be honest, the googly eyes are what really bring these little mummies to life.
This would be such a fun recipe to make with the kids before Halloween, for a Halloween party or even as a special fall breakfast. My favorite part is that you can let the kids take over the decorating, so they don’t have to be perfect. In fact, the messier the icing, the better!

Ingredients
The ingredients for this are super simple and probably things that you already have in your kitchen.
For the Apple Filling
- 2 large apples, cored and cubed
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon butter
For the Mummy Pop Tarts
- Frozen pie crust sheets, thawed
- 1 egg, for egg wash
- 1½ cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- Candy googly eyes
How to Make Apple Mummy Pop Tarts
1. Make the apple filling
Start by melting the butter in a saucepan. Add the cubed apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, vanilla extract and lemon juice. Give everything a good stir and cook until the apples are soft and tender. Once they’re done, set the apple mixture aside to cool a little.
2. Cut out your mummy shapes
Thaw and unroll your pie crust sheets. Use a rectangular cookie cutter to cut out the shapes for your pop tarts. You’ll need two pieces of crust for each mummy. If you don’t have a rectangular cookie cutter, don’t worry! You can easily cut rectangles with a knife or pizza cutter.
3. Add the apple filling
Place one piece of pie crust on a lined baking sheet and spoon some of the apple mixture into the center. Try not to overfill them. I know it’s tempting because that apple filling smells SO good, but you need enough room around the edges to seal the pop tarts.
4. Seal the pop tarts
Brush the edges of the pie crust with your egg wash. Place another piece of crust on top and gently press the edges together to seal the filling inside. I like to use a fork to crimp around the edges, which helps keep everything sealed while they bake.
5. Bake
Bake according to the directions on your pie crust package. I baked mine at 400°F for about 8 minutes, but keep an eye on them since oven temperatures and pie crust brands can vary. Once they’re lightly golden, remove them from the oven and let them cool completely before decorating.

Now Let’s Turn Them Into Mummies!
Mix the powdered sugar and milk together in a small bowl to make your icing.
Once the pop tarts have cooled, drizzle the icing over the top in a zig-zag pattern to create the mummy’s wrappings.
Don’t worry about making perfectly straight lines. We’re going for cute and spooky, not professional pastry chef.
While the icing is still wet, add two candy googly eyes to each mummy. And that’s it!
You have adorable little Apple Mummy Pop Tarts ready for Halloween.
Tips for Making These Mummy Pop Tarts
- Don’t overfill them. A little apple filling goes a long way. Too much can make the pop tarts difficult to seal.
- Let the apple filling cool. This makes the pie crust much easier to work with.
- Have fun with the icing. There is absolutely no need for perfect lines. The more imperfect they look, the more mummy-like they become!
- Get the kids involved. Let them add the icing and googly eyes. This is definitely the part they’ll want to help with.
- Make them ahead. You can prepare the pop tarts earlier in the day and decorate them once they’ve cooled.
