Homemade Mother’s Day Gifts
How many of you scramble year after year trying to find the perfect gifts for the moms in your life? Guilty over here. Honestly, I’ve got enough macaroni art for days and I’m running out of places to display T’s latest artwork.
This year I wanted to do things a little different and put a fun twist on the gifts we give for Mother’s Day. We thought long and hard about things we love to do together as mom and daughter, and hit the drawing board. Together we were able to come up with four fabulous gifts that any mom can actually use and will fall in love with. Check out these homemade Mother’s Day gifts that we crafted. Each one took under 30 minutes to make and cost less than $15. Take about a win win!
Watermelon Print Makeup Bags
Supplies for sponge printed makeup bag
- Canvas makeup bag (like these or these)
- Pink fabric paint
- Green fabric paint
- Black fabric paint
- Dish sponge
- Scissors
- Small paint brush
- Cardboard
Instructions
- Start by cutting the sponge into watermelon slice shapes. You’ll want to cut triangles for the slice and a semi-C shape for the rind. The easiest way to do this is to cut a rounded wedge on each corner. Then make a semi-round cut on each corner to create the shape for the rind. (See image below)
- Place a small piece of cardboard inside of the makeup bag to prevent the paint from seeping through.
- Dip the triangle watermelon shaped wedges into the pink paint.
- Stamp the shaped sponge onto the canvas bag until the bag is designed the way you like.
- Dip the rind shaped sponge into the green paint.
- Stamp the rind onto the bag with next to each watermelon wedge.
- Once the watermelon wedges are dry, take your paint brush and dip it into the black paint.
- Paint black watermelon seeds onto each watermelon wedge.
- Allow to dry for up to 24 hours before washing.
Note: If you are using acrylic paint instead of fabric paint, allow the paint to dry for at least 24 hours then cure the acrylic paint by placing an iron over the design for 30 seconds. Be sure to place a towel in between the iron and the bag to prevent any paint from getting onto the iron.
