DIY Olympic Gold Medals
These DIY Olympic gold medals are so perfect for your celebration. I love that they only take a few supplies that you probably already have lying around at home. You can get the kids involved or even turn this into an activity station at your party. Here’s the supplies you’ll need and the steps to create these awesome medals.
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Cricut Joy
- Round acrylic blanks
- Gold acrylic paint
- Paint brush
- Gold permanent vinyl
- Transfer tape
- Weeding tool
- Scraper tool
- Ribbon
- Hot glue gun
- Toothpicks
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Set Up Your Cricut Joy: Plug in your Cricut Joy and connect it to your computer or smartphone. Open the Cricut Design Space app to create your medal design.
- Paint the Acrylic Blanks: Use the paint brush to cover the round acrylic blanks with gold acrylic paint. I painted the back only but you could definitely paint both sides. Let the paint dry completely.
3. Design Your Medals: In Cricut Design Space, create a circle design as the template. Size the design to fit the acrylic blanks. I used the number “1” with olive branches for the design. You can find the Design Space file here.
4. Prepare the Vinyl: Place a sheet of gold permanent vinyl onto your Cricut Joy mat, with the shiny side up. I used a blue light grip mat but a green standard grip mat will work as well. Load the mat into the machine.
5. Cut the Vinyl: Select your design in Cricut Design Space and choose to cut it out of the gold vinyl. Press the “Go” button and let the Cricut Joy do the work. Once done, use the weeding tool to remove the excess vinyl around your design.
6. Apply Transfer Tape: Cut a piece of transfer tape and place it over your vinyl design. Use the scraper tool to press the tape firmly onto the vinyl. Peel the backing off the vinyl so the design sticks to the transfer tape.
7. Attach the Vinyl Design: Position the vinyl design on the painted acrylic blank. Use the scraper tool to press it down firmly. Carefully peel away the transfer tape, making sure the vinyl design sticks to the blank.
8. Attach the Ribbon: Cut a piece of ribbon long enough to fit around your neck. Use the hot glue gun to attach each end of the ribbon to the back of the acrylic blank. Let the glue dry completely.
And there you have it! You’ve just made your own Olympic gold medals with your Cricut Joy. These medals are sure to make your watch party extra special. Enjoy the games and go for the gold! 🏅
