This past weekend we celebrated The Mr’s 26th birthday with a surprise staycation at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando. The Mr is a very laid back person and it’s so hard to find something that he absolutely loves when it comes to shopping for birthday gifts. This year I wanted to do something different than buying something material that would eventually get worn out and get faded out of our lives. I came up with the idea of doing a staycation. I wanted to plan something that we could all enjoy as a family and a staycation seemed like the perfect idea. A staycation would allow us to do something low key, affordable, and create memories together.
A surprise staycation is not something easy to pull off when the person you’re planning it for does not like surprises. With a few easy tips, you can pull off the perfect surprise birthday staycation.
Tip #1: Pick an amazing location.
This tip is so important to pulling off the surprise especially if the person you’re surprising isn’t willing to play along and wear a blindfold. You want to be sure to pick a location that isn’t too far from home but has all of the right amenities. I chose a King room at the Hyatt Regency on International Drive in Orlando. This hotel was perfect for our weekend. The property has 3 outdoor pools, private cabanas, hot tubs, a spa, golf course, and a gym.
Tip #2: Plan activities.
The last thing you want to happen when you get to the hotel is having nothing to do. Get to know the hotel, the amenities, and surrounding activities when planning the surprise birthday staycation. I planned the entire weekend out. When we checked in we would head to our room and get changed to head to the pool. T loves swimming with her dad so I knew that had to be at the top of the list. After swimming we would head back up to the room to shower and give let The Mr open his gifts. Then, after gifts we would simply enjoy each other in out hotel room until it was time for dinner. There’s nothing better than relaxing and watching a movie together as a family during your staycation.
Tip #3: Add a personal touch.
Make sure that the right people are there. In this case, I knew that Tatiana would have to be there. Although a romantic weekend at Hyatt Regency would have been nice, I know that nothing would make The Mr happier than celebrating his birthday with Tatiana. She loves celebrating birthdays as much as I do and we know how to plan great surprises! Two things that The Mr loves are Florida State and socks so T and I visited our favorite store to get a few Florida State gifts for her dad.
Tip #4: Don’t forget the cake.
You can’t celebrate a birthday without the birthday cake. Since The Mr isn’t a cake lover, we only got a small cake for him but he was still able to blow out the candles and make a wish. If you do happen to forget the cake, Hyatt Regency has great dessert options in their restaurants.
All in all, the surprise birthday staycation that T and I planned for The Mr was perfect! He was so surprised and had a great time. The Hyatt Regency was the perfect place for our staycation and we can’t wait to go back.
