Step 1: Design your pennant banner
First, you’ll want to create a design for your pennant banner in Cricut Design Space. Here’s a link to the design that I created. If you’re not sure what design you’re wanting to use, you can use a design already on Design Space. Cricut Design Space offers a wide variety of pre-made designs or you can make your own from scratch.
- Open Cricut Design Space on your computer or mobile device.
- Choose the “Text” tool if you’re adding letters or words. You can select from different fonts and sizes based on your preferences.
- Customize your design with fun shapes or patterns (like stars or hearts) to make it unique.
- Once you’re satisfied with your design, resize it to fit on the pennant flags (measure the dimensions of the pennants to make sure your design fits nicely).
- Select Make It to begin the cutting process.
Step 2: Prepare the Cricut Joy Xtra
Now it’s time to load your glitter iron-on vinyl into the Cricut Joy.
- Place your glitter iron-on vinyl shiny side down on the StandardGrip Mat.
- Load the mat into the Cricut Joy machine.
- Ensure that your Design Space settings are set to cut Iron-On (Shiny Side Down), then press Go.
The Cricut Joy will begin cutting your design. Be sure to monitor the process to ensure everything cuts properly.
Step 3: Weed the vinyl
After the Cricut Joy has finished cutting, it’s time to weed out the excess vinyl.
- Carefully remove the cut vinyl from the mat.
- Use your weeding tool to remove the excess material from around your design. Be gentle and take your time to ensure that your design remains intact.
Step 4: Set Up the heat press
Next, we’ll apply the glitter iron-on vinyl to the blank pennant banner using the heat press.
- Set the heat press to 315°F and preheat for about 5 minutes to ensure it reaches the right temperature.
- Once preheated, lay your blank pennant banner on the heat press or a heat-resistant surface.
- Place the weeded glitter iron-on vinyl design on the pennant with the shiny side facing up (the plastic layer should be on top).
- Position the design where you want it on the pennant. Use a ruler if needed to make sure everything is aligned properly.
Step 5: Apply the heat
Now it’s time to transfer your design to the pennant.
- Close the heat press and apply medium pressure for 15-20 seconds.
- Carefully remove the pennant banner from the heat press.
- Let it cool for a few seconds before peeling off the plastic layer from the iron-on vinyl. If any part of the design is still lifting, place it back under the heat press for a few more seconds.
Step 6: Repeat the process for the glitter vinyl
If your banner has multiple pennants, repeat the steps above for each one. You can mix and match designs or colors for a more dynamic look, or keep it consistent for a cleaner aesthetic.
Step 7: Hang and enjoy!
Now that your DIY pennant banner is complete, hang it up in your desired spot. Whether it’s for a party or just to brighten up a room, this personalized piece will add a special touch to any space.
