With a little education, passion and the help of Amnesty International, mothers against gun violence can work together to protect their communities. Thank you Amnesty International for sponsoring this post.
Growing up, gun violence wasn’t as prevalent as it is today. I’m grateful to partner with Amnesty International to educate mothers against gun violence and all of my readers. Amnesty International is the world’s largest grassroots human rights organization. Would you believe that they recently released a new report declaring gun violence in the United States to be a human rights crisis?
Every few weeks we hear about another shooting in a school, a neighborhood, and in places you would least expect it. Thousands of people die each year in the US from gun violence. While mass shootings often make the headlines, the daily relentless death toll rarely does. Over 100 people die each day in homes, schools and on the streets of our country. A society filled with senseless violence is not a good society for kids. In the past, we’ve chosen to shield Tatiana from the violent events that have taken place in our country. However, once they created mandatory shooting drills/procedures for schools, we had to begin educating her at home. As a mother against gun violence, it’s important to me that my kids are safe wherever they go.
Mothers Against Gun Violence: Things You Can Do to Help Save Lives
1. Know your rights
You have the right. You have the right to live. You have the right to security of person. You have the right to move freely around this country without fear.
2. Find out how to get involved
Communities across the country are working together to put an end to gun violence. Organizations like Amnesty International can educate you on the best ways to get involved in your community. As parents and moms, it’s our job to protect our children. The best way to do that is to get involved within our communities.
3. Educate yourself
Learning all about the recent studies, reports, and legislation is critical to helping end gun violence. Each state has their own gun laws so finding out what laws your city and state has will be helpful in protecting your community. If you have guns in your home, make sure that you’re taking the proper precautions and keeping them away from children.
4. Educate your children
Educating your children is as important as educating yourself. Let them in on what is going on in the world around them. Have open conversations with them that allow them to ask questions. Educate them about the ins and outs of guns. Did you know that studies have shown that kids as young as age 3 can shoot a gun? Make sure that they know guns are not toys and what they are to be used for.
