Life Lately: 2017 Holiday Blog Update

Life Lately: 2017 Holiday Update | Bianca Dottin

Last week I did a quick survey on my Instastories asking what type of content you all wanted to read. One of the topics you asked for more of was these life lately posts. So today I’m going to give you exactly what you’ve asked for, a blog update with all the things that have been happening to us since the holidays have begun. I’m dishing out on the good, the bad, and the ugly plus recapping some of my favorite posts on the blog lately. Hold on because this is going to be a long but good one.

2017 Holiday Blog Update

Let’s start with business first because I’m almost positive that the personal stuff is going to ruffle some feathers and bring the tears, for some reason it always does. (P.S. The personal stuff is going to be in a part 2 of this post since this one will be long).

2017 was a good year business wise. I made the jump to blogging full-time last year only a month after I had found out that I was pregnant with Tristan. I had been with the company for almost 2 years when they had decided that they no longer needed a Social Media Manager because they couldn’t afford me in their budget. Cool. I was ready to take on a less workload because I had been working about 50 hours per week and wasn’t being paid nearly as much as I should have plus with a baby on the way, I needed less stress in my life.

When Tristan was born blogging took a backseat. After he died, I jumped headfirst back into it. It was a way of healing for me. I was able to put my focus on something else besides the anger and pain. 2017 by far has been my most fruitful year as a blogger. I’ve had some amazing opportunities come my way and worked with some of my favorite brands (Seventh Generation, Nature Made, Kia, Dove, Lido Beach Resort, HP, and so many more). My writing got better and so did my connection with my readers.

2018 Content Plan

I’ve been thinking long and hard about how I want to structure my content for next year. I’ve talked about it with my husband, my blogger friends, and I’ve asked my followers on social for their opinion too. I want to be able to share the most valuable content on my blog. Whether it’s fashion, beauty, travel, or all about motherhood – I want it to be the best.

So, here’s what I came up with. Next year I’ll be sharing more how-to style looks (like this one), mama + me looks (like this one), recipes, travel guides/vlogs (check out this travel guide for an example + subscribe to my YouTube channel here), and motherhood/parenting posts (like this one). I’ll also be sharing more tips for bloggers in my Better Blogs & Branding Series (like this post here). I’ll share a couples look here and there but you guys let me know that you like my husband just right where he is, behind the camera. Trust me, he’s happy about that! Posts will go live Monday-Friday at 8am like clockwork.

My newsletter, The Weekly Edit, will go out every Tuesday. If you’re not subscribed, you can subscribe here. In it, I share lots of behind the scenes content, my favorite tips & tricks for getting things done, and sneak peeks. Plus my subscribers are always the first to know when I’m releasing something new on the blog. (Hint: I’ll be releasing a product line and a few free e-books that my subscribers will get first dibs on.) Let me know what else you’d like to see in there too.

In addition to more consistent content, I want to be able to give you guys more tools to tackle this motherhood and blogging thing. I think sometimes we all get caught up in the picture perfect lives that people post on social media but I’ve always been honest with you all about my life and as transparent as I can be while still preserving some sense of privacy. However, I’ve met a lot of women this year who have told me that they look up to me. Every single time I’ve been taken back by this. I’m not sure why these women look up to me because clearly I don’t have my shit together but I do think that I’ve got this motherhood and blogging thing down for the most part. I want to share everything thing that I know with you, so in the new year I’ll be releasing e-books and printables that can help you get your daily routine down and figure out what works best for your lifestyle. A lot of the information will be geared towards mamas but most of it will be helpful for the everyday working woman/blogger too.

I focus a lot on keeping things simple so I want to help you by giving you tactical tools to reach your goals and be intentional in your everyday life.

Building Better Relationships

One of my main focuses for 2018 will be building better relationships. Admittedly this has always been something that I’ve been bad at. I have friends of course and I “know” people in the blogging world but I am terrible at keeping in touch with people. This usually seems to offend people close to me, and to be honest the only friends I’ve got sticking around are the ones who get my life.

But starting in the new year, because I figured it’d be too much to ask of myself to start now, I’m going to work on building better relationships not just with friends and bloggers that I meet but with brands. I want to be able to build a relationship with brands so that I can give you guys more than one sponsored post. I want you all to get to know and love my favorite brands through my blog and social media pages.

Making Money Moves

2017 has been all about sewing seeds for 2018. We’ve been working on plans and making moves for our family’s future. I’m a planner and my husband is an executor which makes us a great team. We believe in our family’s future and have a big vision of what it should look like. Together we’ve come up with a very open plan on how we’ll achieve our goals. By open I mean that we’re open to change and adjustments because we know that although we have a plan, God’s plan is always bigger than ours. Our plan consists of attainable goals for the next year and an action plan of how we’ll achieve them.

My family and I, Tatiana included, sat down to talk about our business plans and pinpoint our words for the year. My blog word is EXPOSURE and our family word is PIVOT.

Literally only a couple of days after we picked our words, I secured my very first speaking gig at a blogging conference for next year where I’ll be speaking to new bloggers about creating a brand that stands out. Honestly, I applied because I thought that I wasn’t going to get picked. It was one of your shoot your shot type of moments and I was lucky enough to get picked. When I found out, I almost cried. I was home alone, it was in the middle of a work day, and I called my husband immediately. I love being able to share these moments with him! He was almost as excited as I was but of course he couldn’t leave the sarcasm out of his response. He joked about me going alone because it’s probably going to be cold in Chicago in September. For me, this moment solidified that I know what the hell I’m doing and that I’m on the right path. This conference has been around for years and I’m humbled to be able to speak.

Mamas of The NICU

You know that our passion project for Tristan is Mamas of The NICU. The idea came to me while we were still in the NICU and it’s something that I think is desperately needed. We recently release our journal for NICU moms and are working towards raising $10,000 in 60 days through Kickstarter to fund the project in order to donate journals and NICU Survival Kits to moms in need.

We’re also working towards a 501(C)3 non-profit status and I couldn’t be happier about that. It’s crazy to me that all of this is happening so quickly and that we’re able to do something so special not only to honor our son but to help other moms who are going through what I went through. We’ll be releasing the journals in just a few days for sale as well so please be on the lookout to share that good news with anyone you know who may benefit.

Blogger Babes Who Brunch

Remember that blogger brunch that I hosted way back? I’m bringing them back! I love brunch almost as much as I love meeting other bloggers. I realized that I couldn’t make this happen alone though so I partnered up with one of my favorite blogger babes Lex from Finding Lex. Her style is amazing and she’s one of the best friends and partners I could ask for. I’m so excited to be taking this journey with her!

We’re currently working on planning our first event in the Spring. I’ll be sharing details about that soon but be sure to follow us on social media for all the details.

Wonderful post and idea. This is a good idea for bloggers to take a serious look at their content for the last year or so. We have to continue to give our readers what they want. Love the bloggers who brunch event idea.

You look so adorbs! Yes, one of my goals for next year is to be a stronger member of the blogging community- especially in my niche. I could do a better job of visiting my plus size blogging sisters’ sites and sharing their content. Hopefully I’ll get it back in return.
